Game Brainstorm

I've never been a big gamer growing up, I always left that to my brother, who could spend hours upon hours playing games on his Xbox before getting in trouble for spending so long on it! But even then, sometimes I would sit and observe what kind of games my brother would be playing in his spare time, from Grand Theft Auto, to Call of Duty, to FIFA, there was a wide variety of games that he loved to play whenever he could.

As I got a bit older, I started to sneak into my brothers room while he was out with his friends and turn on his console and indulge in the world of gaming myself. I really enjoyed learning about all these different types of games that he had. Grand Theft Auto quickly became one of my personal favourites and I would always beg my brother to let me play it whenever I could.

So for my project for Multimedia Development 1, the four genre of games I think I would be most interested in creating myself would be;

- First Person Shooter
-Life Simulation
-Action-Adventure
-Racing

First Person Shooter

First person shooter games are quite popular within the gaming community. There are so many different first person shooter games out there. You have the likes of Fortnite, the whole Call of Duty saga, Apex Legends, Counter-Strike, the list goes on!

I think if I was to choose to create a first person shooter game I would try to create it in the style of Fortnite. This style is almost cartoon like and isn't as gory and gruesome as some other first person shooter games, so it would also be suitable for kids over a certain age. I would make sure that the game is simple to create and also simple to play.

I would use Unity as a source to help me with creating a first person shooter game, they have some great tutorials that will be of great help if I decide to create a first person shooter game.

Life Simulation

I was the biggest fan of The Sims growing up, it has always been my favourite game to play on the computer. While my brother would spend hours upon hours playing games on his Xbox, I would spend hours upon hours on the families shared laptop playing The Sims. Life simulation games really interest me because it's almost like another reality, you are controlling these little pixels inside your computer and you can make them do whatever you want just with the click of a button. This is probably the genre I'm leaning most towards for my project because it's the one I think I will be most interested in.

Another Life simulator game that I have loved to play is BitLife. This is a mobile game rather than one on the Laptop and is quite different to The Sims.

"Even though BitLife uses a text-based simulation method, its playability has no impact and is a very addictive game. At the start of the game, you will have a new life. Then year by year you have to acquire new skills and develop and live your life. The main lesson you can take from the BitLife game is learning from the past. You have the chance to try various types of lifestyles and decide what will be best. Doing good things will improve the BitLife Karma and it will give you more positive things in your life. Then you can apply those steps to your real life to improve your real life."  BitLife

To help me with learning to create a Life Simulator game, there are some tutorials on Youtube that I think will be very helpful if I decide to create a Life Simulator game.

Action-Adventure

The only Action-Adventure game that I'm familiar with is Grand Theft Auto. I would play it a lot a couple of years back and really enjoyed driving around in cars, shooting people and just having a laugh on it, but I always made my brother complete all the tasks in it so I could mess around on it.

This genre is probably the one I would least likely choose as the genre for my game because I am the least familiar with this genre and also because I think it would be quite a hard genre to create on C# .

If I was to decide to create a game with this genre I would use some online tutorials from the Programming is fun website to help me.

Racing

Racing games we're also one of my favourites when I was younger. Whenever I would go to an arcade, the car games were always the first ones I would run to because they were always the most fun to me. As I got older I really started to enjoy watching racing as well, I got really invested into Formula One and would try to watch it every weekend.

Formula One has their own racing game on Xbox and PlayStation and it's a really fun game to play. It reminds me a lot of the racing simulator games in arcades and the games makes you feel like you are actually inside of a Formula One car.

There are also so many other console racing games like Need for speed or Forza that are also really enjoyable.

If I was to create a racing game for my project I would try to create it in an arcade style way to make it feel more nostalgic and to make it look appealing too. I would look up some YouTube tutorials to help me with this.

  1. Hi Rachael, after reading through your list of game ideas the two that stood out to me most were Life Simulator and Racing. Life simulator stood out to me because I loved playing it back in late 2000's on the xbox a game called The Urbz Sims in the city. Me and my sister would play this hour upon hours competing who could get the most money and make their house look the coolest. I like this idea because I would like to see someone else's take on a Life Simulator because the only version I have seen is from sims who pretty much own the Life Simulator scene. The racing also stood out to me because I also love this genre of games as I loved The dirt games and racing arcade games back in the day. I like the nostalgic idea of arcade racing games so I feel you can make something pretty cool there.

  2. HI Rachael,
I think your game ideas are very good! All of them seem to be achievable within the span of this module. `Personally I would say stick to either the first person shooter or the racing game since there are easy tutorials available for them. But then again, it’s only advice. I may not know anything. DO what you LIKE!!

  3. Hey Rachael!!, I love your idea of a life sim. I was playing around with a similar idea, I'm also a fan of The Sims and I love the idea of expanding on what a life sim could be. I think it would be a really interesting and fun idea to run with!
