Game Elements

Game Elements   What are the qualities of a game? Games have a lot of qualities to them, some follow a series of rules and objectives to get to a finish point, some have a certain sequence that they have to follow in order to complete the game, some games even tell a story. Games like Cluedo have different rules and objectives to games like Fortnite or other first person shooter games, but at the end of the day, they all follow rules and objectives to get to the end of the game. The article also talks about having a critical analysis for games. As designers we know how important it is for people to critique our work so we know how to make it better, so telling a game designer that their game is good is a great confidence booster for them, however you're not telling them anything that they can work on to make it better, and those critiques are what they're looking for. Feedback Strategies

Image
Source The first article that I read was " Be a mirror: Give Readers Feedback That Fosters a Growth Mindset ". In this article they talk a lot about how giving feedback in a certain way can encourage kids to develop a growth mindset. One of the feedback strategies that they mention that I agree with is to be specific when giving feedback. When I was growing up in school, most of the time when being given feedback I really needed the teachers to spell it out for me so I knew specifically what to work on, I didn't enjoy when they were too broad with their answers because then I would panic and not know where to start with improving my work, which would then lead me to procrastinate because I didn't know where to start, I would have rather them tell me exactly what I needed to work on so I could get on with it faster. I don't mean tell me what to change to make it right, but more specific ways to go around my work so I could learn and improve. The second article that...

Game Idea Research

Image
Source After getting my feedback on my Game Brainstorming, the genre of game I have decided to create is a racing game, I think that this genre of game will be good because it's not too difficult for my first game and it is also a genre that I enjoy playing so I think it will be fun to create. One of the mechanics I would like to have in my game is the aim to collect as many coins as possible within a certain time frame. I think to expand this mechanic also, I would like to somehow incorporate a magnet as like a booster in the game, when you're driving ahead, you're able to pick up a magnet that will work for a certain amount of time so you don't have to move around to collect all of the coins. Another mechanic I would be interested in is trying to get the car to reach the finish line, with obstacles in the way, without running out of fuel, I got the idea from this website here  . I think that I would also make some bonus fuel tanks along the road that the car can col...

Unity Tutorial 02

Image
Source This was my second time using Unity and I think that I'm starting to get the hang of it a bit better. I found that I was not relying on the tutorials as much as I did last week and I was getting the work done a lot quicker than my first time using it.. I am really enjoying coding in C# which is still a bit new for me but I seem to be getting quicker at navigating my way around the Visual Design studios and getting a bit back into coding again. One thing I found difficult with Unity this week was the little small mistakes, sometimes I would forget to add a semi-colon at the end of a line of code and then the game wouldn't work, or I would add a close bracket too close to a word and then it would tell me there was an error in Unity, but thankfully these are just small little mistakes that can easily be fixed and are not huge ones that would make me have to restart anything over again. I really enjoyed Unity a lot more this week than I did last week and I'm excited to c...
