Feedback Thoughts
Neil Gaiman's advice on the creative life
When I first read this article I was a little confused on how it corresponded to dealing with negative feedback, but I realised with creative projects, you're never going to get it right the first time so that negative feedback is essential. You follow steps and processes to make a creative masterpiece, or somewhat close to one so negative feedback is encouraged to help you make your project the best that it can be.
"If you are not making mistakes, you're not taking enough risks." Debbie Millman
When we make mistakes we are making something new, and most importantly we are learning in the process, we are also challenging ourselves we make mistakes because we're doing something we've never done before so mistakes are natural.
Seven ways to crush self doubt
Self doubt is something that each and every one of us has and deal with on a daily basis, especially when it comes to our work. People tend to pick apart their work to find every small thing that might be wrong with it. This can have a negative impact on how people view their work and also people may start becoming reluctant to begin projects because they just assume that they're always going to find something wrong with it and compare it to others work.
Sometimes we just have to learn to not compare our work with others, we have to learn that no two things should be the same, people strive to be like others and strive to make their work like others when in reality, uniqueness is a noticeable quality in ones work.
As I said before, people strive for their work to be perfect, they think that any small mistake will ruin whatever they're creating and the project wont be good enough. This isn't the case, nothing can be completely perfect, people are always going to find fault in whatever you do, so just make something that you are satisfied with and be confident that other people will enjoy it too.
People tend to set unrealistic goals within their work, this comes back to comparing their work to others and also striving for perfectionism. Sometimes you just have to learn to set goals that are manageable for you so you're not overworking yourself and tearing yourself apart to make your work something that you may not be able to create.
ReplyDeleteHey Rachael,
Again, I really enjoyed reading your blog this week. I didn’t read those articles this week I read why rejection hurts so bad and silence the critical voices in your head.
You’re so right negative feedback is essential when you’re creating a creative project. It’s all definitely part of the process.
Comparing and despairing your work to others is probably the worse thing you can do. Uniqueness is noticeable quality in one’s work.
See ya around,
Alex.
